How Do I Configure TCP/IP for Windows 2000?

Before you begin, As with all software, you should consult your users manual or the Macintosh help files for detailed information. Cable Internet Services provides the information that follows as a guideline only.

 

If your Windows 2000 TCP/IP settings have been changed since installation, please follow the following directions. Also, make sure you have your Windows installation disks or CD handy before beginning. If your Ethernet card was supplied with a driver’s diskette, be sure to have that available as well. (Note that Windows 2000 includes built-in drivers for Ethernet cards installed .To configure TCP/IP for Windows 2000:

Click on START, and then select CONTROL PANEL from the SETTINGS menu. Select the NETWORK AND DIAL-UP CONNECTIONS icon, and double-click to open the window. 

If the Ethernet card in your computer is installed correctly, the Local Area Connection icon will be present. Double-click on the icon. Click PROPERTIES in the Local Area Connection Status window.

 

 

Under Connect Using, the Ethernet card to which the Local Area Connection in question is pointing is displayed. Underneath, the components that are bound to the card are shown, with a check box next to them if they are currently active. Verify that there is a check next to TCP/IP, and place one there if it is not checked. Highlight the INTERNET PROTOCOL (TCP/IP) option, and click PROPERTIES.

 

 

The Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window will open. There is only one tab, General. For the Cable Internet service to work correctly, the configuration should appear as it does the image below - Obtain an IP address automatically should be selected in the first section, and Obtain DNS server address automatically should be selected in the second section.

 

 

Click OK to finish

Network Configuration

 

To configure your Windows computer, click START; go to SETTINGS and then to CONTROL PANEL. In CONTROL PANEL, double-click the NETWORK icon.

 

Verify that minimally, an Ethernet adapter is installed and that the TCP/IP protocol is installed and points to the Ethernet adapter. If you have a previous dial-up Internet connection, it is likely that your configuration includes a dial-up adapter that is bound to TCP/IP. You may leave these configuration entries as they are without interfering with the Internet service.  Verify that your Primary Network Logon is set to Windows Logon.

 

When you add or change adapters and protocols, Windows will prompt you for your Windows CD ROM and optionally for a manufacturer's adapter driver disk. You will be prompted to restart your system when additions or changes of this nature are necessary.

Highlight the ETHERNET ADAPTER and then click PROPERTIES

 

Bindings

Review the information in the Bindings tab. TCP/IP should be bound to the adapter. Verify that a checkmark appears in the checkbox. Select OK when finished. (Note: it should not be necessary to make any changes to the settings on the Driver Type and Advanced tabs.)

 

TCP/IP Properties

Click to highlight the “TCP/IP” protocol that is bound to the Ethernet Adapter and then click PROPERTIES

 

Configuring the IP Address

Click the IP ADDRESS tab. Verify that “OBTAIN AN IP ADDRESS AUTOMATICALLY” is selected. This setting is required to enable DHCP server to assign you an IP address automatically. This setting is required.

 

DNS Configuration

Select the DNS CONFIGURATION tab. Verify that DISABLE DNS is selected.

 

Bindings Tab

If you have installed the Client for Microsoft Networks, verify that file and printer sharing are not checked. The Client for Microsoft Networks is often installed in order to enable saving passwords on Windows 95/98 machines.

 

 

If the Client for Microsoft Networks is not installed on your system, no components will display in the Bindings tab.

 


Gateway Tab

No Gateway entries should be made in the Gateway tab.

 

 

WINS Configuration Tab

Verify that DISABLE WINS RESOLUTION is selected in the WINS CONFIGURATION tab.

If your Windows ME TCP/IP settings have been changed since installation, please follow the directions below. Also, make sure you have your Windows installation disks or CD handy before beginning. If your Ethernet card was supplied with a driver’s diskette, be sure to have that available as well.

 

NOTE: As with all software, you should consult your users manual or the help files for detailed information.

Click on START, and then select CONTROL PANEL from the SETTINGS menu. Select the NETWORK icon, and double-click to open the window. 

 

Select the instance of TCP/IP that is linked to your Ethernet card, and click PROPERTIES

 

 


The TCP/IP Properties window will open. The first tab, IP Address, will display. Verify that OBTAIN AN IP ADDRESS AUTOMATICALLY is selected. Also, at the bottom of the screen, verify that DETECT CONNECTION TO NETWORK MEDIA is checked as well.

 

Click on the WINS CONFIGURATION tab. Make sure that the USE DHCP FOR WINS RESOLUTION button is not selected. This is the default setting. The Disable WINS Resolution button may also be selected for proper functioning.

 

 

Click on the GATEWAY tab. There should be no entries listed under Installed gateways. If an entry exists, highlight it and click REMOVE.

 

Click on the DNS CONFIGURATION tab. Make sure that DISABLE DNS is selected.

 

 

Click OK to finish 

 

 

How Do I Configure TCP/IP for Windows NT?

Before You Begin:

Please make sure you have your Windows NT Workstation 4.0 installation disks or cd-rom handy before beginning. Windows NT Workstation 4.0 may need to copy some driver information during the configuration process. If your Ethernet card was supplied with a drivers diskette, be sure to have that available as well.

 

NOTE: As with all software, you should consult your users manual or the help files for detailed information: network, username, computer name and identification.

 

To configure your NT Workstation v 4.0 click START, go to SETTINGS and then to CONTROL PANEL. In Control Panel, double-click the NETWORK icon. In the Network dialog box, click the IDENTIFICATION tab and enter a COMPUTER NAME if needed and a WORKGROUP NAME.

 

Important: Do not change both Computer name and Workgroup at the same time. Change one first and then restart. Then change the other and restart a second time.

 

 


Services Configuration

Click the SERVICES tab, and make sure the following default services are listed. These are installed by default when you initially installed TCP/IP. For additional information, refer to your NT Workstation documentation or Microsoft support services.

Computer Browser, RPC Configuration, Server or Workstation 

If you need to add a Service, click ADD and do so.

 

 

Protocol Configuration

Click the PROTOCOLS tab and then verify that the TCP/IP Protocol is listed. If it is not, add it.

 

With the TCP/IP Protocol highlighted, click PROPERTIES


Then click the IP ADDRESS tab and set to OBTAIN AN IP ADDRESS FROM A DHCP SERVER.

Click the ADVANCED tab to verify that DHCP is enabled.

 

 

DNS and Host Name Settings

Click the DNS tab to display the host name properties. We recommend that for consistency and convenience that you use your specified hostname. If you did not specify a host name (not a requirement), the default is your e-mail name.

 

 

WINS Address Configuration

Click the WINS ADDRESS tab. Verify that the only entry here is your Ethernet card.

 

 

Routing Configuration:  Click the ROUTING tab, then verify that the ENABLE IP FORWARDING is NOT checked. Click OK. Return to the Network dialog box.

 

 


Adapter Settings

Click the ADAPTERS tab, then verify that your Ethernet Card is listed. If your card is not listed, please add it.

 

 

Bindings Configuration: Protocols, Services, and Adapters

The Bindings tab contains a drop down list box that allows you to display different views of your networking configuration.

Services

Click the BINDINGS tab, select ALL SERVICES from the drop down list, and verify that you have at a minimum, TCP/IP bound to the Ethernet Card.

 

Click OK, then click CLOSE and restart your computer when prompted.


Protocols

Select ALL PROTOCOLS from the drop down list in the Bindings tab. (This is not the same as the Protocols tab)

Expand all entries by clicking on plus (+) signs

TCP/IP Protocol should be bound to the adapter 

WINS Client (TCP/IP) should be bound to the adapter 

 

 

Adapters

Select ALL ADAPTERS from the drop down list in the Bindings tab.

Expand all entries by clicking on plus (+) signs

The adapter should be bound to the TCP/IP Protocol 

WINS Client (TCP/IP) should be bound to Server AND Workstation 

 

Verifying Settings

After you have restarted your computer, verify your settings. Click START, go to PROGRAMS and then select COMMAND PROMPT. At the command prompt, type "ipconfig/all" to verify that you received a IP address. You may close this window once you have verified your IP address.

Wired LAN Network Settings

By default MacOS 10.x uses DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) to request an IP address on the GateHouse Network.

GateHouse Networks will need the MAC address of the customers Ethernet Card. This can be found on the TCP/IP Configuration screen.

  1. From the  Apple menu, select System Preferences...

  2. Double-click Network and choose Built-in Ethernet under Show:

  3. In the TCP/IP tab confirm Using DHCP is used. All other fields should be left blank as shown below.



4. Click apply now.

Before You Begin

As with all software, you should consult your users manual or the Macintosh help files for detailed information. Cable Internet Services provides the information that follows as a guideline only.

Configuring Open Transport 2.5.2: To configure Open Transport: From the top toolbar, click the APPLE icon. Select TCP/IP from the CONTROL PANELS menu

 

Once the TCP/IP control panel is open, on the top toolbar click USER MODE from the EDIT menu, and set the mode to ADVANCED. When done, click OK.   

In the Connect via selection, select ETHERNET 

In the Setup - Configure selection, select USING DHCP SERVER and make sure the Use 802.3 option is unchecked.

 

 

Disregard any # in the IP Address field. This will be correct after your first connection. 

Click the OPTIONS button and set TCP/IP to ACTIVE. Uncheck the option load only when needed, and click OK when finished.

 

 

 

No entries should be made in any of the other fields (which are shown as blank in the sample image above) 

Click CLOSE BOX in the upper left hand corner of the TCP/IP window, and then select SAVE to save your settings 

Go to the toolbar and select RESTART from the SPECIAL menu to restart your computer.

 

 

Windows XP Home- TCP/IP Configurations

Double click on control panel

Double click on Network and Internet Connections.

 

 

Select Network Connections

 

Right click on Local Area Connection

Select Properties.

Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

Click Properties.

Make sure selections below apply.

Click Advanced……

Make sure DHCP is enabled.

NIC Card should be installed and displayed in the “Connect using:’’  box.

Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

Click properties

 

Make sure the selections are as in this window.

Make sure that DHCP is enabled.
